Alan was conferred the Bachelor of Dental Surgery in 2001, and Master of Dental Science (Prosthodontics) with Honours in 2007 by the University of Sydney. He was awarded the ITI Scholarship to attend the University of North Carolina, Department of Periodontics, where he received further full-time training in implant surgery and grafting.

Over the decades Alan has developed techniques, such as the Split-Key Technique for veneers, and invented dental tools, such as the ProsMate, which are used by dentists around the world. He leads the country in the placement of immediate implants utilising the Socket Shield Technique in the aesthetic zone.
